Which Baby Swaddle is Best? In-Depth Reviews for a Perfect Sleep

Comparing Swaddles from the Babylist Swaddle Box: Find Your Baby’s Perfect Fit!

Swaddling can be magical—it calms, soothes, and helps your baby sleep better, which means more sleep for you too! But, as we know, every baby is different which makes planning ahead a challenge. The Babylist Swaddle Box allows parents to try different swaddle types and see which works best before making bigger investments. I tried out all the options in the box with my newborn, and here are my honest reviews on which work best - both for baby and for you (as you’ll be doing the swaddling!)

ErgoPouch Cocoon Swaddle Bag 1.0 TOG: Versatility Meets Comfort

The ergoPouch Cocoon Swaddle Bag is designed for parents who value versatility and simplicity. With a snug, cocoon-like fit, it helps minimize startle reflexes and encourages longer, more restful sleep for your baby. This swaddle bag comes in a 1.0 TOG rating, perfect for moderate room temperatures, but it also comes at other TOG ratings.

One of the standout features is its dual zip, which makes nighttime diaper changes quick and effortless without fully unswaddling your baby. Plus, the adjustable armholes mean this swaddle can transform into a sleeping bag, making it suitable for babies who prefer arms-out sleeping. For moms looking for a flexible and thoughtful design, the ergoPouch offers both functionality and maximum comfort. It’s simple, easy to use, and aesthetically my personal favorite. While this one doesn’t have much versatility for growth, ergoPouch does offer other products as your baby grows like the Sleep Suit bag (which converts from sleeping bag to sleeping suit) or Romper.

The material is high quality - I have washed it multiple times and there are no signs of wear and tear. Most importantly, it is certified non toxic and complies with AU, US, UK and EU safety and quality standards and is reviewed by the National Eczema Association as a skin-friendly product.

10/10 for newborn - 2 years old!

Love to Dream Swaddle UP Original: Freedom in Style

After a few days together you will quickly start to learn your babies’ preferences. The Love to Dream Swaddle UP Original is the best bet for babies who like to wriggle out of their swaddles and sleep with their arms up. Unlike traditional swaddles that keep arms down, this unique design allows babies to sleep with their arms up in their natural position. This can also be ideal for babies who like to self-soothe by touching their faces or sucking on their fingers.

While it is the least versatile of the options, only allowing for one sleep style, it works wonders for the right baby. This was the preferred swaddle for both of my children. The simplicity of it also makes it really easy for caretakers and diaper changes in the dark - you really can’t mess this one up and there is no wriggling free.

Made from a soft blend of cotton and elastane, the Swaddle UP provides a snug and cozy fit while allowing enough stretch for movement. It’s certified hip-healthy design allows the recommended flexion for hips and legs. Importantly, the quality is also excellent. I am using the swaddles I saved from my first child 2 years ago and they are still in excellent condition !

For the right baby, I give this one a 10/10. However, due to the specificity of it I would not stock up on these until you’ve tried it on your baby for a few nights.

Halo Cotton SleepSack Swaddle: A Classic Choice for Peace of Mind

The Halo SleepSack Swaddle is a time-tested favorite among parents, combining the benefits of a traditional swaddle blanket with the convenience of a wearable blanket. Made from 100% cotton, it offers a soft and breathable sleep environment.

One of its prominent features is the adjustable fasteners that allow a secure swaddle around your baby’s torso while leaving room for movement at the hips, promoting healthy hip development. The three-way adjustable design means you can swaddle with arms in, hands-to-face, or one or both arms out, making it adaptable as your baby grows. This is the most versatile swaddle in the box, but also requires a few more steps than the simple zip up of the ergoPouch and Love to Dream.
I also noticed that my newborn can wriggle her hands out of this swaddle, so it might not be the best option for fussy sleepers.

While the fabric is soft, it doesn’t have any safety certifications, merely stating that is 100% cotton interlock. The fabric does brush off, unlike the other two swaddles. And the velcro, while good for adjusting the snuggness, may be a nuisance to some parents.

Overall, this one is highly versatile and definitely worth trying while learning your babies’ sleep habits. However, because it takes a few more steps to wrap and has a slower lower fabric quality, I give this one a 6/10.

aden + anais Essentials Cotton Muslin Swaddle: Trusted & Timeless

For those who appreciate multi-purpose baby items, the aden + anais Essentials Cotton Muslin Swaddle offers unmatched versatility. Known for its soft, breathable cotton, this swaddle can be used not just for wrapping your baby but also as a nursing cover, stroller cover, or tummy time blanket. I actually prefer to use it for everything but swaddling, as wrapping the traditional way without any zippers or velcro’s only really seems to work with the most experienced swaddlers. For nighttime sleeping, I much prefer one of the more modern options where I am more confident that my baby is snug, secure and not wriggling out during the night.

The muslin fabric is lightweight and gentle against your baby’s sensitive skin, providing a breathable wrap. Its generous size makes it easy to practice different swaddling techniques, which is perfect for moms who are keen to master their swaddling skills. Although it requires a little more effort compared to zip-up styles, many mothers do find satisfaction and confidence from learning traditional swaddling techniques with this classic.

While I give this one a 5/10, I am grateful that it comes in the sample box because I am able to use it for other purposes.

How to Choose the Right Swaddle for Your Baby

Deciding on the right swaddle largely depends on your baby’s preferences and your lifestyle. For this reason, I highly recommend the Swaddle Box so you can see what works best for you and your baby before stocking up.
