How to Choose a Safe, Organic Mattress

How to Choose a Safe, Organic Mattress: Exploring Certifications like CertiPUR-US

Choosing the right mattress is crucial, especially when it comes to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for your family. With the increasing demand for organic and non-toxic products, it's no wonder parents are seeking out safer bedding options. But when it came time to move my toddler into a twin bed, I went down a mattress rabbit hole. There was so much information out there, it was hard to figure out what was important. On the one hand, he spends 1/2 of his life on this. Of course I don’t want him breathing harmful VOC’s or flame retardents (more on that below). But at the same time, is it really necessary to buy a $700 mattress? The whole process was overwhelming, so I’m sharing my findings here.

In this post, we will dive into the world of safe, organic mattresses and explore key certifications like CertiPUR-US to help you make an informed decision.

Why Choose an Organic Mattress?

When we spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping (and with toddlers, even more) the materials in our mattresses matter. Organic mattresses are made from natural materials such as organic cotton, wool, or latex, which minimizes exposure to harmful chemicals often found in traditional mattresses. These materials are not only eco-friendly but also breathable and durable, making them a smart choice for a comfortable and non-toxic sleeping environment.

Key Certifications to Ensure Mattress Safety

Certifications can offer peace of mind by ensuring your mattress meets high safety and environmental standards. Here are some key certifications to look for:

1. CertiPUR-US Certification

When shopping for foam mattresses, check for the CertiPUR-US seal. This certification assures you that the foam is made without harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, PBDEs, heavy metals, and phthalates. Additionally, it ensures low-VOC emissions, improving indoor air quality. A CertiPUR-US certified mattress gives you confidence that it is both safe and eco-friendly for your family.

2. Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

GOTS is one of the most comprehensive organic textile certifications available. It ensures that the mattress textiles, such as cotton, wool, or other natural fibers, are organic and processed in environmentally friendly and socially responsible ways. A GOTS-certified mattress guarantees that it meets rigorous standards for both ecological and social criteria.

3. Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)

If you’re considering a latex mattress, look for the GOLS certification. It ensures that the latex used is organic and that every step of production—from harvesting to manufacturing—is environmentally sustainable. GOLS-certified mattresses provide reassurance of a high-quality, non-toxic product.

4. OEKO-TEX Standard 100

The OEKO-TEX certification focuses on the presence of harmful substances in textiles. When a mattress is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, it has been tested and proven free from harmful levels of over 100 substances. This certification supports the selection of a skin-friendly and safe mattress option.

Tips for Finding the Right Organic Mattress

With an understanding of certifications, here are some additional tips to guide your mattress shopping experience:

- Do Your Homework: Research different brands and their materials, as well as customer reviews, to gauge the performance and comfort of the mattress.

- Check the Materials: Ensure the mattress uses high-quality organic materials and inquire about the manufacturing process. Look for hidden toxic words like:

  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) or Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA): widely used flame retardants that have been linked to health risks

  • Formaldehyde: a VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) often used in mattress adhesives or resins. VOC’s can emit harmful off-gassing.

  • Fiberglass: Another fire resistant material that can release particles known to cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, and environmental contamination.

- Look for Transparency: Brands that are open about their production processes and materials tend to be more trustworthy.

I ended up choosing the OUUI Bamboo Mattress because it met all the requirements I was after: affordable, safe & transparents materials, and CertiPUR-US certified. It was also the only one that was the right height for my sons bed, so that factored in too. I am really happy with my decision. The mattress is very comfortable (my son agrees!) and there are no noticeable smells coming from it.
