Stop Buying These Toxic Baby Products

5 of the Most Toxic Products for Babies and What to Buy Instead:

We all want what is best for our kids, especially when it comes to their health. But with so many products on the market, it can get overwhelming to know which ones to choose. As you navigate the aisles, both physical and digital, filled with colorful packages and soothing claims, how do you know which products are truly safe for your baby? Oftentimes, we revert to the products and brands we know and trust that the information we are given is true. Yet, despite many brand promises, some baby products contain harmful substances that may pose risks to your child’s health. To help you rise above the clutter, here are some toxic baby products you might want to reconsider, as well as healthy, non-toxic swaps you can feel good about.

1. Baby Powder

Baby powder has been a staple in nurseries for generations, so it’s understandable why so many of us would default to this without question. However, conventional talcum-based powders come with significant health concerns, primarily due to talc's potential contamination with asbestos, a known carcinogen. Research has suggested links between talcum powder and respiratory issues or more severe health problems like cancer.

Swap it: Choose an all-natural, non-toxic diaper cream instead. Like this one by Matys or this one by Burt’s Bees. Both are made with natural ingredients, without any parabens, phthalates, or petroleum. They get the job done while still being gentle on babies’ skin.

2. Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are an essential part of diaper duty, yet some may contain harmful chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances that can irritate a baby’s sensitive skin or even affect their developing endocrine systems.

Swap it: Opt for baby wipes that are labeled as organic or free from harmful substances. Look out for brands like WaterWipes or Honest Unscented Wipes, which use safer ingredients, like water and fruit extract, to keep your baby’s skin clean and protected. Alternatively, homemade wipes are a frugal and healthy option—just combine a soft cloth with water, a small amount of baby-friendly soap, and a couple of drops of essential oils if desired.

3. Plastic Baby Bottles

The convenience of plastic baby bottles can often disguise their underlying risks. Many plastic bottles contain bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical widely criticized for disrupting hormones and posing developmental risks. Despite efforts to develop BPA-free plastics, other bisphenols (like BPS) remain a concern. Plastic bottles are especially dangerous when heated, as microplastics leach into the milk/formula at dangerously high levels.

Swap it: Glass or silicone bottles are excellent non-toxic alternatives without the chemical baggage. I personally love Bibs for glass bottles and Boon for silicone. These are both stylish and durable bottles that ensure every sip is safe. While these options are more expensive than plastic options, they are much longer lasting (I used the same glass bottles for both kids, two years apart) and you know that you are giving your baby the safest possible option.

4. Breast Feeding Storage

For pumping moms, single use plastic bags have historically been the go-to option for freezing and storing milk. But defrosting milk in plastic exposes your baby to harmful chemicals that leach inside. But without any real alternatives on the market, moms were left with little choice.

Swap it: Thankfully, a new company called Boob Cube has entered the market to solve this problem. With Boob Cube, everything that touches you and your baby is entirely plastic free and non toxic - from the pumping bottles, to the freezing trays, to the defrosting bag. You can simple turn your milk into ice cubes and then safely store them in glass or silicone containers. This is a game changer! Read my detailed review of Boob Cube here.

5. Foam Play Mats

Foam play mats are fantastic for providing cushioning and a bright spot for playtime. However, some foam mats contain formamide and other toxic substances like EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate), which might release formamide—a chemical linked to developmental issues—into the air over time.

Swap it: Consider eco-friendly, non-toxic play mats made from recycled materials or organic cotton. Read the materials to ensure they are free of common chemicals like BPA, PVC, and latex. Brands like House of Noa offer luxurious, safe mats without harmful chemicals, ensuring a secure and comfy play space for your little one.

A Greener Path Forward

Navigating the sea of baby products can be daunting. The journey to ensuring your baby’s well-being involves not just understanding what to buy, but also what not to buy. Each conscious choice contributes to a safer, healthier environment for your child. Armed with knowledge and a keen eye for labels, you can start making swaps today, choosing non-toxic and safe options that align with your values and prioritize your little one’s health.
